Private chauffeur, taxi or ride-hailing in Paris — which is right for you?
Three ways to get around Paris, three different promises. Here is what separates them and how to choose for the journey you are planning.
In short
- A taxi can be hailed or booked and runs on regulated fares; ride-hailing apps give an instant price that can move with demand.
- A pre-booked private chauffeur is arranged in advance, with one fixed price for the route and a host who speaks your language.
- For planned journeys, groups and luggage, pre-booking gives certainty. For a short spontaneous ride, a taxi or an app may be simpler.
Three services, three promises
A taxi is a licensed vehicle you can hail in the street, find at a rank or book. Fares are regulated, and for some airport journeys they are flat. A ride-hailing car is ordered in an app; you see a price when you request the ride, and it can change with demand. A pre-booked private chauffeur is arranged in advance: you agree the route and the price before the day, and a chauffeur-host is waiting for you at the agreed time and place.
In France a pre-booked chauffeur works under the VTC regime: he must be booked in advance and cannot pick up passengers in the street. VELLEMONT works the same way: every journey is planned in advance, and online booking needs at least 24 hours’ notice.

When a pre-booked chauffeur makes the most sense
- You arrive at an airport or station after a long journey and want to be met rather than to search.
- You travel with a family or a group — up to seven — and luggage.
- You want a price you know before you travel.
- You want someone who speaks your language and can advise on the route.
- You are planning a day trip or a day of appointments and want one car throughout.
When a taxi or an app is simpler
If your plans are spontaneous, you are alone with light luggage and the journey is short, a taxi or an app may be quicker — nothing needs to be booked in advance. A private chauffeur is not meant to replace every ride; it is meant to remove uncertainty from the journeys that matter.
Quick answers
Is a private chauffeur the same as a taxi?
No. A taxi can be hailed and uses regulated fares. A private chauffeur is booked in advance and, with VELLEMONT, priced at a fixed amount for the route.
Can I book a private chauffeur on the same day?
Online booking requires at least 24 hours’ notice. For anything sooner, message us on WhatsApp and we will tell you honestly whether a car is available.
